Shark Diving

The Shark Adventure

This could quite possibly be the most exciting dives you will ever do. Stuart Cove’s Shark Adventure™ is a 2-tank dive program which introduces thrill seeking divers to wild sharks and provides you a close up look at these magnificent and misunderstood creatures.

There are currently four sites where we dive with the sharks. You will dive either the combination of "Shark Wall" and "The Arena" or the combination of "Runway Wall" and "The Runway". At either location encounter a gathering of Caribbean Reef Sharks on a consistent basis.

Your first dive is a "Free Swim" with the sharks on a magnificent wall. The sharks will follow you throughout the dive because we are close to our feeding site and they know the dinner bell will ring soon. However, no bait is exposed on this dive. This keeps the sharks curious and creates a very natural encounter for divers - just as you would encounter a shark in the wild.

Your second dive is a shark feeding dive. Unlike ordinary dives - you will spend this dive kneeling on the sand bottom. Divers form a semi-circle in front of our professional shark feeder who will place a bait box. Your feeder utilizes this bait box and a pole spear to control the release of food which influences the sharks behavior. While novice shark divers may not notice it - during the shark feeding dives your feeder tries to keep the sharks in a "polite" feeding posture. However be warned - the sharks will come close - very close - but they are more interested in the bait than you!

Shark Awareness Specialty Course Book Now!

Since I began my career in diving over 20 years ago, I first observed and then interacted with the shark population around the island. Those early experiences paved the way for our participation in Hollywood blockbusters such as "Never Say Never Again" and "Jaws IV: The Revenge" where I worked as the films "Shark Wrangler". The outgrowth of those experiences led to the development of our Shark Adventure™ dives which we offer regularly.

Unfortunately, due to man's intervention, the shark population worldwide is dwindling. Several years ago, we at Stuart Cove's pioneered the first ever "Shark Awareness Specialty Course" to combat this. The goal of this course is to introduce divers to sharks and to educate the divers to the important role sharks play in maintaining a healthy oceanic ecosystem. It also educates divers to the real habits and nature of sharks in their natural environment. In addition, our specialty course has now been approved for teaching the academic portion in the comfort of your own home.

For booking your Shark Awareness Specialty Course call our US reservations office or your local dive center to reserve space for this very distinctive specialty course. After completing both the academic portion and the open water portions of this course you will join the elite group of "Shark Awareness" divers enjoying shark encounters around the world!

Let's go diving soon.... with the sharks!

Stuart Cove

It’s a well-known fact that the world’s shark population is dwindling rapidly. This decline is due to the shark's one and only predator...man. Whether it is a lack of knowledge about shark behavior in general or over zealous fishermen, sharks are indeed in trouble. The "Dark Ages" of Shark knowledge are now part of your past when you join Stuart Cove’s Shark Awareness Course. The simple goal of this course is to introduce you to the shark. Through an academic program presented by a multi-media presentation, you will learn how to identify different types of sharks, understand some of their behaviors, and learn why this animal is so important to the overall oceanic ecosystems.

The course will also teach you proper behavior for diving with sharks and will finish with you completing two shark dives - a free swim with sharks and a shark feeding dive. Upon completion of the academic and open water sections you will be awarded a specialty certification. Included in the course fee are the academic presentations, our 2-tank Shark Adventure, certification fees, patch, and certificate.

Shark Feeder Program

Move beyond the passive observational shark dive to the middle of the action when you train to become a shark feeder yourself ! Stuart Cove's Shark Feeder program takes you on a private, behind the scenes adventure that will allow you to participate in our normal Shark Adventure dives and then progress on and learn how to be the feeder!

Your first day starts early in the morning when you are greeted by your "Shark Buddy" upon arrival at the dive shop. Your "Shark Buddy" is an experienced shark feeder at Stuart Cove’s and a scuba instructor. For the next two days - you will live in your buddies shoes as a shark feeder.

The morning begins with a behind the scenes tour of Stuart Cove’s facility. Then it's off to the classroom where you will take the Shark Awareness Specialty Course. This course will give you the basic knowledge you should know about sharks including how to identify certain species, how to read behaviors such as aggressive and polite feeding, and basic anatomy. The morning course finishes with a detailed briefing of the Stuart Cove Shark Adventure™ dives. During this briefing you will be given numerous observation assignments for the afternoon dive.

Once the class is completed its off to the dive boat where you will participate (as a guest) in the Shark Adventure™ dives. On this trip you will be performing your observation assignments. These two dives also complete your Shark Awareness specialty course. During the two dives you will observe both natural and feeding behaviors of the Caribbean Reef sharks. You will be suited up in chainmail positioned next to your "Shark Buddy". Your "Shark Buddy" will now show you his/her point of view. Near the end of the feed dive, your "Shark Buddy" will turn the spear and bait box over to you, for the last few pieces of bait.

Day two begins with you and your "Shark Buddy" who will review the previous days dive and you will given further instructions on basic feeding techniques.

Your adventure continues when you board your private boat for your personal shark feeding dives. Accompanying you will be your "Shark Buddy", a crew person for the boat, and staff from Fin Photo. A combination of video and still pictures will be taken during your 2-tank dive. On your first dive you will be feeding using your newly learned techniques and the second dive is you and the sharks, having an adventure of a lifetime!

The evolution of shark wrangling in movies led to the development of a complete underwater production company that specializes in underwater shark sequences for feature films, documentaries, television commercials, and print.
